GOAL

A county with a balanced and expanded economic base that supports growth of environmentally-friendly, clean and high-tech industries; that provides year-round high-paying jobs for young people and others trained and educated for these jobs

OVERVIEW:

The Community Character Task Force extended its support to the formation of a partnership between the Economic Development Council and Collier County Government. Recognizing the fragility of our current seasonal, tourist-and-real-estate-based economy, this partnership has created and funded a plan which will diversify the economy, decrease dependence on residential tax revenues, increase job opportunities for residents and current students and preserve and enhance the natural environment.

ACHIEVEMENTS:

- Economic Diversification Program prepared by Florida Planning Group and approved by Commission

- Economic Prosperity Plan developed by EDC and Collier County Board of Economic Advisors, and approved by County Commission for implementation

RECOMMENDATIONS; IMPLEMENTATION NOW UNDERWAY:

For the public sector:

- Institute a pro-competition taxation and regulatory climate

- Allocate occupational license fees to support diversification efforts

- Provide ombudsman business assistance services

- Expedite permitting for qualified businesses

- Secure funding for grants and incentives

For the private sector:

- Develop and implement internal growth strategies

- Promote highly-targeted recruitment strategy

- Increase employability of County's work force

- Encourage pro-competition taxation and regulatory environment
