REGISTRATION INFORMATION

Registration for classes will take place during the first class of the course that you choose to attend.  Students are requested to go directly to the class of their choice and register with the instructor.  There is no pre-registration.

FEES AND REFUNDS

Students will pay the fee shown on the schedule at the first class meeting.  In some cases there will be an additional charge for materials or supplies consumed by the student.  REFUNDS WILL NOT BE GIVEN.  However, credit vouchers for a future course may be obtained during the second week of class by contacting the Adult Ed. office.

ELIGILBILITY

GED, ABE, and English classes are open to anyone who is at least 16 years of age and not enrolled in high school.  Several fee-supported classes are open to all ages if certain conditions are met. For more information, contact the Adult and Community Education office at (941) 593-2711.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

English for Adults

Do you have a friend or relative who is a limited English speaking adult and who wants to improve his or her English?  Do you work with limited English individuals who are looking to communicate better at the workplace?  Our Adult English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Program is the right place for them!  Classes are funded by Florida’s Division of Workforce Development and are offered at no cost to the student.  Students may enter the program at any time during the school year.  Look for these classes at the different sites throughout this schedule!

The following course descriptions provide a short, concise explanation of some of the many courses offered through the Adult and Community Education program.

ART, BASKET MAKING: Basic Appalachian basketry techniques will be used to make traditional baskets with a personalized design.  Advanced students may bring projects or create a Nantucket Lightship basket with instructor’s molds and supplies.

ART, OIL, BEGINNING / INTERMEDIATE: For those who have no experience or have taken some classes, but are not prepared to work on their own.  Bring materials you have for oil painting.

ART, OIL AND ACRYLIC, ADVANCED: Studio-type situation where painters work on their own with critique from the teacher.  Bring materials you have for oil painting.  Be ready to paint the first session.

ART, BEGINNING WATERCOLOR: This course is designed for beginners and for those who want to review the basics.  A painting will be completed during each class.  Subjects include flowers, animals, buildings, and landscapes.

ART,FLOWERS IN WATERCOLOR: This course is designed for those who want to paint only flowers  and who have had the basics and are interested in painting on a more advanced level.

ART, ROSES IN WATERCOLOR: This course is designed for those who want to paint only roses and who have had the basics and are interested in painting on a more advanced level.  A different view of a rose will be painted during each class meeting - includes detailed work, color (including white), background, and negative shapes.

ART, WATERCOLOR, INTERMEDIATE AND ADVANCED: For those who have had some training or experience in watercolor painting.  Bring what you have in materials, and we will discuss what else is needed.

CHINESE:  All levels welcome.

CITIZENSHIP (Bring alien card): Students will need to bring their resident alien card to the first class.  You should start translating all documents into English.  An N-400 form will be filled out in class.  Call Mary Lou Weiss at 261-4790 for more information on Citizenship.

CHOCOLATE! CHOCOLATE!: Learn to make delicious and beautiful delights.  Classes will include instruction in tempering, decorations, truffles, pastries, cakes, and an amazing centerpiece.  Students take home their creations.  Consumables charge of $25.00.

COMPUTER, ADOBE PHOTOSHOP, BEGINNING: Explore basic concepts of image editing by working with the toolbox, selections, resizing, channels, and image resolution.

COMPUTER, BASICS OF WINDOWS: Learn how to manage your desktop to fit your needs.  You will learn how to manage your files, control and change your display screen, and install and load programs. You will also learn what programs you have on your computer and how to start them, and what software you do not have. Let us show you how to get control of your computer.

COMPUTER, BEGINNING: Introductory computer course for beginners.  Students will learn terminology, how to operate a PC, and how to create and manage files.  They will explore today's many uses of computers and begin to use popular Microsoft programs.

COMPUTER, INTERNET, INTRODUCTION: Students will learn the basics of the Internet and how to apply them.  They will study searching techniques so they can practice finding the information they desire on the World Wide Web.  Other topics to be covered include e-mail, business, and educational uses of the Internet.  Students will spend most of the class time actually using the Internet in a lab setting.

COMPUTER, INTERNET, NON BEGINNING: Students familiar with the Internet will learn more about configuring web browsers, web-related software, and searching the web for representative sites.  An overview of web page design and the business of web sites are included.

COMPUTER, MICROSOFT ACCESS: Learn the basic techniques of using database information, tables, forms, queries, macros, modules, and reports.

COMPUTER, MICROSOFT EXCEL: Learn how to use the popular spreadsheet component of MS Office, and find out how spreadsheets can be used for home and business in a variety of ways.

COMPUTER, MICROSOFT WORD: The word processing component of the Microsoft Office software package.

COMPUTER, MICROSOFT POWERPOINT: In this course, you will create dynamic professional presentations with impact and clarity using Microsoft’s PowerPoint 2000. You will learn how to select an appropriate scheme using standard templates, auto content, and your own customized layouts. You will also learn the tools and techniques needed to integrate transitions, animations, clipart, photos, sound video, bulleted lists, text, and lots more. You will be able to package your presentations to burn on a CD, complete with audience handouts and speaker notes, or convert them to html for an instant web page presentation! Never use chalk boards, grease boards, or slide projectors again to make your presentations!

COMPUTER, MICROSOFT PUBLISHER: In this course, you will learn the basics of desktop publishing and the techniques needed to design and create publications like flyers, newsletters, invitations, custom cards, pamphlets, websites, and MORE using Microsoft’s Publisher 2000. You will learn to use templates and custom design many elements to bring text and graphics together in dynamic ways.

COMPUTER, WEB PAGE DESIGN: Create, design, and manage Internet or Intranet web sites with FrontPage 2000. No programming knowledge is required to use this WYSIWYG program, which integrates page-editing tools you are already familiar with in WORD and EXCEL with new tools just as easy to learn. You will learn to plan and create web pages complete with custom backgrounds, sounds, animations, special effects, guest books, forms, tables, frames, hyperlinks, and tons more. Bring your creativity and get your family, personal or company website online!

DANCE, ADULT LATIN: Latin styling and techniques, from basic to intermediate instruction, in the following: Cha Cha, Mambo, Rhumba, Bolero, Samba, Salsa, and Merengue.

DANCE, BALLROOM BEGINNING: A fun introductory class on the basics of ballroom dancing, including: Foxtrot, Waltz, Rhumba, Tango, and Swing.  Designed to get you up on the dance floor in a short period of time, or to reestablish the basics you forgot from long ago.

DANCE, BALLROOM NON-BEGINNING: Designed for those who have a good understanding of the basics and now want to add polish and exciting new steps to their repertoire.

DIAMONDS AND GEMS: This class answers the questions of how to prevent stone switching, how to choose a good jeweler, how to get a good appraisal, and how to care for your fine jewelry.  It also covers where gems are found, mined, cut, and what makes them valuable.  You will learn the basics of diamond grading and how to shop wisely when buying gems or jewelry.

FINANCE, BASIC INVESTMENT STRATEGIES: This fun class will help you learn the basics of stocks, bonds, and mutual funds in language you will understand.  This hands-on class is for anyone who wants a better understanding of the investment world, someone who is beginning to invest, and/or someone who recently became the financial decision-maker by default.    You will have fun and you will understand.

FINANCE, INVESTMENTS: Students will learn the current economic conditions for 2002, all about bonds, stocks, deferred annuities, tax sheltered income and many other forms of investments to meet individual financial goals.

FINANCE, TRUSTS and ESTATES: An introductory course for anyone interested in a better understanding of trusts and the estate process.  Learn how trusts work, different types of trusts, terminology, documents, estate/ gift tax, and more!

FLORAL DESIGN (beginning & experienced): Discover the basic principles of floral design while creating your own silk and fresh flower arrangements.  A supplies list will be given on the first night of class.

GERMAN, CONVERSATION, BEGINNING: A fun course for young and old alike.  The aim of this course is to provide students with conversational proficiency in a variety of day-to-day situations.

GERMAN, CONVERSATION, UPPER BEGINNING: For those who have had the equivlent of a beginning course.

GERMAN, CONVERSATION, INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED: This course targets people who want to further indulge their love of the German language.  It is particularly aimed at those who have studied German at some point in the past.

INTERIOR DESIGN: This course will present practical ideas and solutions for decorating.  Topics include floor planning, color theory, accessories, kitchens and baths, etc.  Bring your problems and questions to class, and we'll try to solve them.

LANDSCAPE DESIGN/ LAWN AND YARD CARE: Plant, grass care, and tree identification, with planting techniques covering the following: watering, feeding, insect and disease control, and soil requirements.

MAIL ORDER AND INTERNET BUSINESS: How to start and operate a mail order and Internet business.  This course is designed to cover every aspect of this remarkable method of selling worldwide.  Simple ABC steps will be taught, with time for questions and answers.  The course will conclude with a tour of an international mail order and Internet business.

MARINE BIOLOGY: (Lecture & Lab) A close look at the common marine animals without backbones found along the beaches of Collier County.  From sponges to starfish, an exciting look at what we see everyday at the beach and wonder,  "what is it?"

PHOTOGRAPHY:  A course for all levels from beginning through advanced.  We will discuss different cameras, film, lenses, camera handling, compositions, general photography, and capturing on film what you "see."

PHOTOGRAPHS, ORGANIZATION AND PRESERVATION: A hands-on course designed to help get your family photographs out of boxes, organized, and into albums.  Time-saving techniques on sorting, prevention of damage, and methods to care for old photographs will be covered.  A meaningful and fun class for all.

QUILTING: Explore quilting with handwork, machine work, applique, fabric selection, and making your own patterns.  Use of photos optional but fun.

SIGN LANGUAGE: No Prerequisite: Offers a variety of verbs along with ample vocabulary for more fluent signing.  Stresses the manual alphabet, numbers, and basic signs needed for communication.  Students will learn signs, construct their own sentences, and sign them to the class.  A.S.L. (American Sign Language) is stressed.

SPANISH, BEGINNING I CONVERSATIONAL: An introductory course.  A book is followed for reference and reinforcement, but conversational usage is emphasized.

SPANISH, BEGINNING II CONVERSATIONAL: Picks up where Beginning I left off with the same book.  Students with some experience in vocabulary and pronunciation may begin with this class.

SPANISH, BEGINNING III CONVERSATIONAL: Students finish "Spanish is fun, book I". This class prepares students for the intermediate course.

SPANISH, CONVERSATION  INTERMEDIATE: For all students with a moderate level of fluency.  This course is taught holistically to enable an integration of students at various levels above the beginning sequence.

TROPICAL FRUIT AND VEGETABLE GROWING: Everything you need to know regarding what to do and not do when growing tropical fruits.  Learn to grow incredible edibles.

TAI CHI:  Learn and practice basic techniques and movements that are applicable for all levels.

WRITING, CREATIVE: A writing course for fiction and non-fiction—for all levels—with in-class exercises, writing assignments, and critiques.  Invaluable tips on getting your work published.

WRITING, FOR MAGAZINES AND NEWSPAPERS: This course offers a hands-on curriculum for students wishing to write for magazines and newspapers.  Includes writing prompts, creativity exercises, lectures, class discussion, and take-home assignments.

WRITING, FOR PUBLICATION: This course will cover the following: how to acquire, develop, expand, and focus writing ideas; various markets open to publication; writing effective query letters and book proposals; the business end of writing; and more.
