Big Brothers / Big Sisters
of Collier County
"Improving our world one child at a time."
Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Collier County
Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Collier County has opened it's doors. For years the Big
Brothers/Big Sisters of Southwest Florida has been trying to address the needs of
Collier County. They have succeeded in managing forty active cases, but recognized
the need of so many more children in this area. They voted to relinquish their rights to
Collier County and discussed options with Tad Dekko and Gene Olliff. They represented
Career Connections. The Board had recently changed it's name to Youth Development
Foundation to assume the role as managing Board of Directors for two other non-profil
programs: Parents As Teachers/Florida First Start and Pat's Kids Club.
The additional management ol Big Brothers/Big Sisters seemed like a natural
extension of the existing programs. With the help of an active and successful
Board and guidence form the Career Connections mangement, BB/BS will
thrive with local community support. So if you know anyone looking to get involved. . .
New Location, New Support, New Caseworker
What would make the BB/BS program more accessible to a wider range of potential
Little Brothers and Sisters, while making it more convenient to Big Brothers and Sisters?
One thing - a better location. Gene Nara at Gulfview Middie School agreed to have the
BB/BS office on his campus. With this move BB/BS will gain public awareness of the
program through the teachers, counselors and the students. The new location offers
access to the children's support networks already in place. This makes the Big Brother
or Sister's job potentially easier through onsite management of a tutoring program.
The new caseworker, Tracy Taylor, will be available to monitor tutoring, allowing for a
quick visit between Little and Big. Tracy is available at Gulfview for anyone who may
want to drop by during her office hours: Tues., Wed, & Thurs. 3-5pm.
