SHHH--Self-Help for Hard of Hearing

Collier County Chapter of Self Help for the Hard of Hearing

The Collier County Chapter of Self-Help for the Hard of Hearing meets on the third Friday of the month at 11 a.m. at the Main Library. Topics have included hearing aids, noisy environments and lip-reading.

SHHH, which will recommence meetings in October (stay tuned to this channel should they restart in September!), is compiling a list of quiet and not-so-quiet restaurants from among its members. The purpose is to promote the good ones and encourage the others to depress the decibels.

The local SHHH coordinators are Merton and Suzie Hill (793-1916).

Can You Read Lips?

Guest speaker Elizabeth Esber had a surprise for those attending a recent SHHH meeting...and for herself!

She performed a test to see how well those in the Main Library auditorium could read lips. There was just one person besides the speaker who was NOT hard of hearing. Only one person failed the test. Guess which one? The rest of us? We didn't realize how much we rely on lip-reading, nor the extent of our talent!--Terry Miller
