What is the Collier County
Association for the Blind, Inc. (CCAB)?
The Collier County Association for
the Blind, CCAB, is currently the only county agency serving and acting
as a referral agency for the visually impaired and legally blind.
The organization has 501(c)(3) status, and is eligible for community support
and grants that will help the training center to expand and modify programs
as needed.
The CCAB, which became a reality
in 1994, has roots dating back to the early 1980s. Vision Inc. was
an information and support group that primarily held meetings and support
sessions for the blind and visually impaired. There were no physical
facilities at that time. In 1994, space was provided for a training
and computer resource center, and Vision Inc. was blended into what is
now the CCAB.
The Collier County Association for
the Blind serves the visually impaired and legally blind members of the
county. There are over 3,300 individuals known to have such disabilities
and the CCAB has 130 active members and provides services to not only members
but anyone in the county who has a visual disability. Approximately
50 individuals have or currently are participating in computer training
or using the equipment for self-development or enjoyment.
Who belongs to the CCAB?
Approximately 70% of the members
of the CCAB are afflicted with macular degeneration and other impairments
which can be caused by stroke, diabetes, birth, aging or accident.
What are the benefits to
belonging to or supporting the CCAB?
In addition to fellowship,
peer support, monthly speaker programs, recreation and social activities,
and training opportunities, CCAB members receive an informative monthly
newsletter and a membership certificate for display.
