In 1986 the AMI of Collier County opened its doors to advocate for persons with brain disorders and their loved ones. As their literature states: "The most shocking thing about mental illness is how little people understand it." The three categories of assistance they provide are:
In 1996 AMI responded to over 30,000 phones calls and sent out over 300 packets of information to persons who requested information on brain disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorders, etc. All of their services are free of charge and they also offer 24 hour a day assistance.
The Naples office is run by Kathryn Leib-Hunter, BSW, a trained guardian advocate who puts in many long hours to advocate for persons with brain disorders. Funding comes from grants, donations and fundraisers and volunteers provide valuable service in the office and out in the community.
There is a Speaker's Bureau as well as a lending library of videotapes, audios and books. AMI of Collier County does all of this on an annual budget of $62,000 and donations are helpful for this important work.
