Rosalie Cloutier
Rosalie Cloutier was the eldest daughter of Jean Francois Cloutier and Charlotte Salois
| One of the mysteries of the Jean Francois Cloutier - Charlotte Salois family was the 'disappearance' of their eldest daughter Rosalie fron any family references after the family moved to Ontario. |
We know that she did not accompany her parents and siblings when they moved to Ontario in the mid 1800's, because she is not listed in any of the census data.
Speculation was that she had died, married or otherwise stayed in Quebec. No trace of her had been found in Quebec research either.
Later during research in the Mormon genealogical records it was found that two of Rosalie's siblings, Joseph and Elizabeth had been baptized in the Iberville - Henriville district.
Visit to Iberville and St. Sebastien
| Iberville is a pretty
little community on the east bank of he Richelieu river, approximately 40
miles South of Montreal. Located in the heart of the community
is a beautiful cathedral fronting the river. Here we learned from the
parish priest that the old records of this large district were now kept in
St. Sebastien approximately 30 miles away. Here is what we found in
St. Sebastien. Joseph Cloutier On the 18th of May 1845, Joseph Cloutier son of Jean Cloutier and Charlotte (Lalonde) born 26th of February was baptized. The godfather was Francis Lachapelle and the godmother was Rosalie Cloutier Elizabeth Cloutier On the 14th of February 1847 Elizabeth, daughter of Jean (Baptiste) Cloutier and Charlotte Salois of the township of Dunham was baptized.......

Conclusions to the Above Information
1. Rosalie was not married and was still part of the family at the time of her brother Joseph's baptism. She would have been 18 years old when she became Joseph's godmother.
2. Frank Lachapelle and Josette Cloutier ( Rosalie's sister) were married in 1846, therefore between the two baptisms.
3. The family lived in Dunham, a small community about 15 miles East of St. Sebastien. Only about 10 miles north of the American border.
4. We are unable to account for Jean Francois being referred to as 'Baptiste' in one record and Charlotte Salois as 'Lalonde' in another.
