![]() Battleship Wisconsin (BB-64) astern of Adirondack early in 1946 Wisconsin was the last active Battleship in the US Navy finally being decommissioned for the third and last time after the Gulf War. she was also the largest of the Iowa class (Iowa, Missouri, Wisconsin, and Kentucky) by eleven inches as a result of a collision after which she received the bow section of the unfinshed Kentucky which was still in the ways when WW2 ended but was never finished. These photos of Wisconsin and the carrier below were submitted by Andrew Johnson - grandson of James C. Trimble SM/3c who served aboard Adirondack in '45/'46 |
![]() This is either Midway (CV-41) or FDR (CV-42) - I can't make out the bow number - being moored by tugs opposite Adirondack at Pier 5, NOB Norfolk, Va. early in 1946. I know Midway moored there because a neighbor of mine was in her crew and I visited him when they were in port on at least two separate occasions. In case you didn't know: FDR was laid down and launched as the Coral Sea prior to FDR's death. She was a Midway class carrier, the largest of that time. |
