In the late summer of 2000 when I first planned our three month stay in Paris, I assumed it would not cost too much more than living at home and foregoing our usual "vacation" or an Elderhostel vacation plus.

I looked a three categories and estimated a cost for each: air travel there and back, the cost of the apartment and the cost of living there in Paris for three months.

Comparison between what I estimated and what we actually spent.

Summary

We spent close to $9,900 but when we considered that we ordinarily spend at least $2,000 on a normal vacation and at least $3,300 on expenses at home even if we don’t go on a trip, the resulting cost of $4,600 extra for spending three months in Paris is well worth it.

Not bad at all!
