Home Fire Safety Tips


Eliminate Hazards

Keep space heaters away from anything that can burn.
Store all flammable materials away from heat.
Do not let trash accumualte in attic, basement or garage.
Do not run extension cords behind rugs or curtains.
Use fuses, circuit breakers and appliances with the UL (Underwriters Laboratory) seal only.
Do not overload circuits.


Fire Prevention

Keep operational fire extinguishers handy.
Install and maintain smoke detectors.
Do not smoke in bed.
Do not leave unattended fires of any kind.
When cooking, stay within the area until you have completed your cooking.
Keep matches and lighters out of the hands of children. Put matches and lighters up high or behind locked doors.


Develop An Escape Plan

Develop and memorize escape routes.
Assign responsibilty for evacuating infants, children and infirmed.
Choose a meeting place outside of the home.
Keys must be easily accessible.
Hold frequent fire drills.
Test every door, be sure there is no fire on the other side (feel the door for heat).
Know two ways out.


During a Fire

Leave personal belongings behind.
Do not go back for any reason.
If clothing catches fire: STOP,DROP and ROLL.
In dense smoke, CRAWL on the floor to the nearest exit.
