My Clips

Believe it or not, besides being a web designer, developer, and programmer, I'm also a trained journalist, with a BA from the
Philip Merrill College of Journalism. Why, you ask? Well, as I saw the downturn of the dot.com's beginning in early 2000, I decided perhaps it would be a good idea to get some experience in another subject. As you'll see by reading some of my clips below, all of my articles combine my interests, and I consider myself to be experienced in a area of journalism usually overlooked: Internet, business and technology reporting.

The Diamondback (Spring 2001 - Fall 2001)
The Diamondback, the independent student newspaper at the University of Maryland, was established in 1910. Since then, it has won the award from the SPJ for the country's most outstanding student publication four times. As a contributing reporter to the Diamondback during the Spring of 2001, I provided an original feature article headlined on the paper's Business/Technology section each week. These articles, provided below, touched on everything from gas prices to recent Internet fads:

Congressional Quarterly (Summer 2000)
CQ is one of the oldest and most respected political publications in the country. Based out of Washington, DC, their daily newsletter, the CQ Daily Monitor, is subscribed to by every member of the US Congress. As an intern at CQ, I researched and wrote political articles, two of which were picked up by subscriber paper The Washington Post and are archived on their website:
Suite101.com (1996 - 1/2002)
In it's heydey, Suite 101 was an innovative idea: a collection of several "managing editors" who wrote articles on topics they cared about. In my case, I was one of the "founding editors" of Suite101, contributing a weekly (then later, monthly) article on my topic, "Computer Gaming" for almost 5 years. The full list of articles can be found at Suite101.com. A selection of my more than 100 reviews, previews, and editorials:
Freelance Journalism Work
  • "A Dark Day on the Web: 9/11/01" (MS Word format) - This feature article, written for an advanced journalism class at school, is a 2,500 word piece exploring the emotions, reactions, and feelings of those on the Internet as the world came together online following the events of September 11th. Delves into an online game whose members were devastated when two of its top players were lost in the WTC. This piece is looking for a publisher -- please e-mail me if you are interested.

  • "The History of CGI in Film" (2000) - I'm not sure whether or not to put this in the web page or journalism section, since it combines a little of both: But I still get a lot of e-mail about this online research paper, which I wrote for a Technology/English class during my Junior year in college. It's one of the only complete websites about the history of computer animation in films, and I've been contacted on more than one occasion by students looking for a comment for their dissertation.
