Links
Ahh, the ubiquitous "links" section. Every homepage has one, and mine is no exception. Here's a list of some of the coolest sites on the web (in my humble opinion, of course), in no particular order. As an added bonus, I've also provided links to some of my friends' sites you might enjoy.
Dan's Favorites
The Internet Movie Database - The best website on the Internet, hands down. And I'll debate anyone who thinks otherwise. Here's a site that epitomizes what the Internet should be -- it consists of a gigantic database of almost every movie, all crosslinked together.
Blues News - I gotta hand it to old Blue, the webmaster of Blue's News, my favorite gaming news website on the 'Net -- he sure knows how to run a website that gets millions of hits yet retain that small (home-town?) feel. He's been reporting the latest gaming news for several years, from Quake 1, to the latest 1st person shooter.
Ebert Online - The king of movie revivers, Roger Ebert is one of the most net-savvy members of the media. At his site, you can read his latest take on the newest flicks, or search through a database of his classic reviews. Plus he publishes his entertaining column, "Movie Answer Man" on his site every week as well.
Ain't It Cool News - The website that has Hollywood up in arms. The success of AICN (which posts scoops about upcoming movies far before any other news source) is due to the tireless work of one mega-movie-geek, Harry Knowles, who adds his distinct sense of.. well.. geekieness, to every story published on the site.
The Lurker's Guide to "Babylon 5" - The site for everything B5. Back when Babylon 5 was on the air the Lurker's Guide diligently recorded every fact and figure, no matter how small, about the best series ever to hit the tube. Now that the show has ended, the site has lost some appeal, yet still makes for some interesting reading.
Retrogames.com - Retrogames follows the latest news and releases in the world of "emulation", or recreating classic video game consoles on the computer. Have the urge to play Ms. Pac Man on your beefy new PC? Check out Dave's site for the scoop on just how the heck you do it.
Michael Crichton's Official Site - The very well designed, yet rarely updated official site of my favorite author, Michael Crichton. Read reviews, send the man a question, and read some answers to questions such as "When are you going to write a new book, ya bum?!".
The Urban Legends Reference Pages - Boy what a great website the The San Fernando Valley Folklore Society has put together. I constantly find myself visiting this page, looking up, and realizing it's three hours later. Basically a (very) large collection of urban legends of all kinds, each legend is insufferably researched and given a status (True, False, Undetermined, etc.)
The Onion - Billing itself as "America's Finest News Source" -- a statement that very well may be true if you consider the finest news to be unbelievably funny -- every week the crazy kids at The Onion release a slew of fake news onto the Net. Sample headlines: "Soulmate Dropped For New, Better Soulmate" and "Credit-Card Metallurgists Unveil New 'Polonium Plus' Visa Card".
CNN.com - Ahh.. timely, well-written news stories, and very little else. I wish we could get the same from the TV variety.
Wired News - Mostly the same technology headlines that sites like News.com deliver, yet with that distinctive Wired "feel". Besides the "just the facts" stories, Wired News also does a great job delving into the current issues circulating around the Net. A good read.
Yahoo! - I think Yahoo! has become so ubiquitous, such a staple of every Net-surfers experience, that most people have begun to take it for granted, like electricity or hot water. Once, when the ISP I worked for accidentally took the Yahoo! search box off the homepage for a few hours, the calls started pouring in: "The Internet is broken!" Personally, I use part or parts of Yahoo! every day: My.Yahoo.com, Quote.Yahoo.com, Maps.Yahoo.com, the list goes on and on.
Film Score Monthly - I'm a big fan of film music, and so are the maintainers of this site. They publish an informative article every day (excluding weekends and holidays) on their page -- be it a review of a new score, an op-ed piece, or a general discussion by readers. They publish a monthly magazine, which is also excellent.
Planet Source Code - I will be the first to admit that this site has saved me on more than one occasion. With "thousands of lines of VB source code for the taking", this quality website will most likely have the answer to your VB programming question.
Qwerks.com - These guys have helped me so much, I really deserve to put them on this list. Basically, they provide a service for small software authors to accept credit cards for orders of your programs. I use them for online ordering of Cli-Mate, and have never had a problem. They take a tiny portion of your profits, but it's really worth it.
Friends' Sites
Never-ever.net - My buddy Ben is one of those people who I think I'll be friends with for a long, long time. At least, I hope so. He's one of the nicest people I've met at school, and someone who I can bitch about girls with and know he can relate. Anyway, Benny also has the habit of making some of the most artistic websites I've ever seen, filled with heart, and feelings, and emotions, and all that fun stuff. Check out his latest, linked above.
The Home Page of Blair Sadewitz - Webpage design is not Blair's forte, as evidenced by his forest-green background color. However, he's a nice guy and a good friend of many years nonetheless. Blair has more computer skills than me, especially networking, yet he spent the summer stacking boxes in a warehouse. Go figure.
Justin's Page - Justin here (or, "Kalina" as he's affectionately known by) is a friend who usually hangs out with Blair and I. He's got some mad computer skillz, mostly consisting of IRC chatting. Seriously though, Justin is one of my homies, and a real nice guy.
Mysterio's Page of Weirdness - My bud Steve's page. Me and Steve have been friends for many, many years, (starting when I moved to Randolph in 2nd grade) and will most likely be for many more. Steve is a Junior at Moravian College.
Dan's World - Dan is a friend of mine from high school, and while he hasn't updated his site since February, I figured I still would link to it. Dan and I were the star students in Mr. Pribula's CompSci class senior year.
Mark's Web Page, v2.0 - Mark is a friend from high school I haven't seen in the longest time, but I'm putting a link to his site because frankly, I'm running out of friends with websites. :)
Steve M's Site - Steve is a friend from high school I also unfortunately don't see much of these days, except for occasionally during the summer, but he has a webpage so he goes on the list. Steve is really big into video production stuff, personally I'm waiting for him to come out with the next Blair Witch Project.
seanbright.com - Sean is a guy I met through my friend Ben, and is a pretty cool guy. He's a lot like me in some respects.. a good programmer who's dedicated and works hard. I'll convert him to the ways of Visual Basic one of these days.
Tim's Webpage - For a long time, Tim's webpage, (Tim is a cool guy I've known for awhile on the net) was nothing more than a simple message: "THIS IS NOT A SITE, GO AWAY". After winning the "Worst of the Web" award, he expanded, and now the site features a very cool Flash mini-site.
Monki.Tzo.Com - This here is my bud Jack's page, who I've known online for a long long time, and then met (in real life!) when I was down in Austin for the premiere of the Wing Commander Movie. I am forever in his debt for getting his dad to drive us in his limo to the premiere.
Hunter's Lair - Hunter is a really nice, smart girl I've known on the net for awhile, ever since my TLW webpage. I'm sure she won't mind me saying that's she a bit of a strange bird -- I'm convinced can not be figured out by a mere mortal like myself. She's obsessed with this guy Gremlin.
Trillian's Rant and Stuff - Trillian really is a mystery to everyone. She was one of the first visitors in the chat room back on my TLW page, and has stayed on my ICQ list ever since. She is a rabid Tori Amos fan, and has the odd habit of playing the Ukulele.
The CIC - A comprehensive Wing Commander website run by the CIC crew made up of Ben, Chris, and a bunch of others. All these guys are nice (Ben and Chris I met in person in Austin), dedicated kids who work completley out of their love for WC. My Wing Commander Website would not have been possible without these guys, and I appreciate their help.
Jason's Website - I knew Jason online for a long time before I actually met him in real life when I worked at Microsoft last summer. Jason is a big whig in charge of the future of Windows at MSFT, working very hush-hush projects. I'll pry some top-secret info out of him yet.
Okay, that's it for now. If you're my friend, have a website, and not listed here, please email me.
