SAN MARCO PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL MEETING

MINUTES – APRIL 14, 2010

Fr. Tim opened meeting with a prayer at 4:40 PM.

Present:  Fr. Tim, Chairman Mike Minozzi, Vice Chairman Jerry Katchmar,  Lynne Minozzi, Nancy Fine, Karen Adams, Joe Granda, Mike Sbertoli, Bill Roche, Hilda Brosky, Terry Ward, Elaine Middelstaedt, Andy Wallach, Tom Walton and Carolyn Katchmar.

Excused Absence:  Steve Imm, Roseanne Christ, Peter Vale, Ed Dalzell, Deacons Minicozzi, McEnaney and Cristoforo.

Approval of Minutes:  Minutes of March 10, 2010 were approved.

Comments from Chairman Mike Minozzi:  Mike mentioned to the board members that we had a great Easter Season.  There seemed to be a much larger crowd that he has seen in the past.  Our Liturgy Chairwoman, Hilda Brosky, did a magnificent job in setting up and coordinating all of the events for the entire Easter celebration.  Since we are in the beginning of our slow season this might be a good time for our members to help us identify and try to make some improvements that might be necessary in order to be properly prepared for our next season.

Mike also mentioned that he would like the meetings to be completed no later than 6 PM.  This does not mean that he would want to deny anyone the opportunity of speaking on a specific issue.  Let’s try to be as clear, direct and concise as possible when addressing the council.

Mike also mentioned the Outreach Committee that Bill Roche has put together.  Bill will give us his thoughts on this during the meeting.

Comments from Fr. Tim:  Fr. Tim complimented Hilda Brosky and the Liturgy Committee for doing an excellent job during Easter Week.  Fr. Tim said that it was truly a parish effort and thanked everyone involved.  It was truly a prayerful celebration.

Fr. Tim received a letter from the Bishop advising that on Holy Thursday “only men” will have their feet washed.  Unfortunately, Fr. Tim said that this decision made by the Bishop was not open for discussion.

As always our Deacons did a superb job in participating in Holy Week Services.  Fr. Tim said that attendance at the schools were very good.  Many of the young families attended.

Committee Reports:

(a)                Grounds and Landscaping: No Chairman has been appointed.    Tom Walton said that there is much to be done. Tom will submit a list of recommendations to the council for the next meeting.  There are some trees that need to be replaced and Tom feels that since the money is there we should go ahead with this project.  Terry Ward has been working with a landscaping company with reference to planting new trees.  Additional information will be presented to the council members at the next meeting. Terry Ward mentioned that someone would like to donate a Royal Palm.  More discussion on this is needed.

(b)               Youth Ministry:  No Chairman has been appointed.  Nancy Fine and Bill Roche met to discuss our youth at San Marco Church. Unfortunately, Peter Vale was not able to attend, but, he emailed his thoughts and views on the subject to Nancy and Bill. Some of the recommendations that were made by the committee members were as follows: hiring a full-time paid youth minister; setting up various programs that would keep our youth involved.  The new youth minister must have a clear vision as to what will be needed for our youth. His/her primary job would be to recruit Junior High and High School children.

Bill Roche is scheduling a meeting with a youth leader at St. William Church. Attending the meeting will be Nancy Fine, Peter Vale, Fr. Tim and Fr.Andrew.  Bill will report the outcome of the meeting back to the council members. We need to make the entire parish aware of our goals. The future of our Church is our young people.

Outreach Program – Bill Roche said that there are 16 members in the Outreach Program, some are going through the Just Faith Program.  We have 20 people who have volunteered in the Literacy Program of Collier County.  They will be starting their training in a few weeks. The snowbirds will be going through their training sometime in the Fall.  Habitat for Humanity will be included as will the soup kitchens of the county and other programs that assist the poor.

Bill Roche also mentioned the Justice for Immigrants initiative. Committee volunteers have placed postcards in the pews of our Church for the parishioners to fill out and forward to our Senators. Bill and the committee are working very hard to have this legislation passed so that immigrant families can stay together, to educate them and help them begin a life toward citizenship

Presentations and/or Parishioner Comments:  Chairman Mike Minozzi mentioned that our parishioners are always welcome to attend the parish council meetings.  We should think about putting the dates and times of council meetings in the Church Bulletin so that it might encourage people to attend.

I will advise Maureen Seabasty to include a notice in the bulletin.

Old Business:

(a)                          Addition of Holy Family to the Constitution.

Hilda Brosky made the following suggestion to acknowledge the representatives from Holy Family on the Council in our Constitution to be put under Article V – Membership, new item “g”.

“The Council welcomes representatives from our Mission Church, Holy Family in Everglades City and provides a forum for their issues and needs to be discussed.  Representatives participate in all discussions, but are not voting members.”

This item will be discussed further and voted upon at the next parish council meeting.

Other Old Business:

(a)           Andy Wallach reported on the income for St. Vincent de Paul Society. With the various events that took place, $13,207.00 was collected for The St. Vincent de Paul Society. Andy thanked Fr. Tim for allowing a second collection on Palm Sunday as well as Joe Granda for the monies raised during the Knights of Columbus Social and Dcn. Mike Cristoforo for money raised from the St. Joseph’s Table event. A second collection will also be discussed in the future.

New Business:

(a)                     Storage Building(s)  It was mentioned by the building staff that additional storage space is needed.  A discussion ensued as to where we would put the pre-fabricated building.  Chairman Mike Minozzi said that if we did go ahead with the storage building, the most likely place would be near the rectory or the garage.  The building(s) must be humidity controlled.  This request needs additional discussion by the council members.

Also, a new golf cart is needed.  Joe Granda said that the Knights of Columbus would be happy to donate one. There was no further discussion on this item.

Mike Sbertoli, Chairman of the Finance Committee advised the members that all of the projects mentioned at the meeting are worthwhile, however, he needs to know the amount that is needed for each project before a decision is made.

(b)                    Parish Directory

Maureen Seabasty is working on the directory.

Other New Business:

It was suggested by Nancy Fine that instead of weekday Mass being held at 8 AM that it be changed to 8:30 am.  This request will be discussed at the Liturgy Committee meeting.
